Jozef CANTRÉ (1890–1957) ‘Head and Birds’, terracotta, partially gilded with gold leaf, signed, 25 x 20 x 16 cm Note: Jozef Cantré (1890–1957) was a Belgian sculptor, wood engraver and illustrator, regarded as one of the leading figures of Flemish Expressionism. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, he studied alongside Frans Masereel, amongst others. His early sculptures show the influence of George Minne and Constantin Meunier, before he developed a more personal style, characterised by the simplification of forms and a powerful expressiveness. Be Monumen Based in the Netherlands from 1918 to 1930, he worked extensively in direct carving in wood and stone and aligned himself with the Expressionism developed by artists such as Frits Van den Berghe and Gustave De Smet. His sculptural work subsequently evolved towards a synthesis of geometric construction, monumentality and dynamic realism. At the same time, Cantré played an important role in the Belgian revival of woodcut printmaking and was a member of the De Vijf group, alongside, notably, Frans Masereel, Joris Minne, Henri Van Straeten and his brother Jan Frans Cantré.
