Description
Frans ERMENGEM (1893–1985) *The Two Friends*, very large oil on canvas, dated 1922 and signed in the top right-hand corner, with some missing sections, approx. 137 x 200 cm. Note: A Belgian poet, painter and art critic, François Maret – also known as Frans van Ermengem – moved in prominent intellectual circles; he was the son of the bacteriologist Émile van Ermengem and the brother of the writer Franz Hellens. His work, situated at the crossroads of literature and the visual arts, is characterised by a profoundly symbolist sensibility, in which the image serves as an extension of the word. As the author of poetry collections which he illustrated himself, he developed an introspective and evocative world, following in the footsteps of Charles Baudelaire and Charles van Lerberghe. His graphic work, imbued with mystery and suggestion, can also be likened to the explorations of Odilon Redon or Fernand Khnopff, major figures of European Symbolism, through his taste for allegory, dreams and inner life. Active as editor of the *Tribune dramatique* and as a translator of art criticism, he contributed to the dissemination of a rigorous aesthetic philosophy, whilst developing a personal body of work in which text and image engage in a close dialogue.
