Note:
A Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver, Kurt Peiser trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp before becoming a pupil of Gerard Jacobs. A realist painter with Impressionist and Expressionist influences, he focused on scenes of everyday life, harbours, seascapes and, in Brussels, life in the Marolles district, describing himself as the ‘painter of the people’.
A member of L’Élan, he exhibited from 1907 onwards in Brussels and Antwerp, and subsequently at the Venice Biennale in 1924, at the Galerie Georges Giroux in 1929, and at the exhibitions of Belgian art in Moscow and Leningrad in 1938. A renowned engraver, he served on the Committee for Original Belgian Engraving alongside Maurice Langaskens, Pierre Paulus, Armand Rassenfosse, Émile-Henry Tilmans and Louis Titz.
His works are held, notably, in the collections of the British Museum, the Hermitage Museum, the Jewish Museum of Belgium and the Belgian State.
