Description
Ossip ZADKINE (1888–1967), attributed to Presumed portrait of Jean Cocteau seated, c. 1932. Graphite on blotting paper. 27.3 × 22.6 cm Note: Bears an old handwritten annotation on the front: ‘Drawing by Zadkine, Paris 1932 (…)’ and, in the top right-hand corner, a note that reads ‘Cocteau’. Traces of blue ink and old marks. On the reverse, a long handwritten annotation detailing the circumstances in which the drawing was made, noting in particular: ‘Ossip Sculptor ZADKINE PARIS between 1930 and 1935 (…) Drawn on blotting paper from a desk pad at the sales representatives’ table at Fèvre & Cie, stones and marbles, 10 Rue Lincoln, Paris, whilst waiting for a commission for Pouillenay stone that he had placed with me. ” The reference to Pouillenay stone corresponds to a material used by Zadkine in several sculptures from this period. Yellowed paper, foxing, stains, signs of wear and a small tear in the lower right-hand corner.
