Description
Ary Jean Léon BITTER (1883–1973) A pair of elephant bookends, in bronze with a nuanced brown-green patina, on oak plinths; one with its trunk raised, the other with its trunk lowered. Signed ‘Ary Bitter Sclp’ and marked ‘Susse Frères Edrs Paris’ on a cartouche on one of the bases, c. 1935. H 28 × W 15 cm and H 17 × W 21 cm Note: Born in 1883 in Marseille, Ary Jean Léon Bitter was admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1906. In 1910, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon National des Artistes Français and received an honourable mention for ‘The Child with the Kid’ He subsequently exhibited regularly at this Salon until 1939 and was awarded a bronze medal in 1913, a silver medal in 1921 and a gold medal in 1934. Throughout his career, he received numerous public commissions, notably a fountain in Nantes in 1913 and a sculpture group entitled “Lion and Child” to adorn the monumental staircase at Saint Charles railway station in Marseille.
