Description
Oscar NEMON (1906–1985)
Portrait of Paul-Henri Spaak (1899–1972), c. 1941. A substantial plaster bust, modelled and sculpted.
Incised signature ‘NEMON’ on the side of the plinth; signature partially worn away. Height approx. 42 cm.
Note:
This portrait is based on the model of Paul-Henri Spaak created by Oscar Nemon in 1941. A bronze cast is held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, inv. 9988, donated by Mrs Paul-Henri Spaak in 1982. Another plaster copy of the same model, signed ‘NEMON’ and of similar dimensions, 45 × 30 × 35 cm, is also documented.
Oscar Nemon ranks among the leading portraitists of the major political figures of the 20th century. In particular, he produced several portraits and busts of Winston Churchill, an emblematic subject in his work, as well as numerous figures from the European political, diplomatic and institutional spheres.
