Note:
An important work from the Jeune Peinture Belge period, *Le clown* was first exhibited in 1947 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and has a family provenance dating back to Marguerite Barbaix, the artist’s daughter. Its inclusion in several publications devoted to the movement, notably its reproduction in Phil Mertens’s reference work, as well as in André Jocou’s monograph on René Barbaix, attests to its significance within the painter’s oeuvre.
René Barbaix was one of the founding members of Jeune Peinture Belge, formed in 1945 around Robert Delevoy and René Lust. The group, which remained active until 1948, played a key role in the renewal of Belgian painting in the immediate post-war period, alongside artists such as Gaston Bertrand, Anne Bonnet, Marc Mendelson, Mig Quinet, Rik Slabbinck and Louis Van Lint.
