Description
Shizu Shimada (1923–2021) Abstract composition, mixed media, signed and dated 1965 in the bottom right-hand corner, 27 x 36.5 cm Note: Born in 1923 in Karafuto, Shizu Shimada graduated in 1942 from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo Women’s Art School (now Joshibi University of Art and Design). She went on to study the history of Eastern art at Waseda University under the poet and calligrapher Yaichi Aizu. Having won awards for three consecutive years at the Niki-kai, she moved to Paris in 1958, where she established her reputation at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de Mai, and in 1962 took part in the exhibition ‘Japanese Painters in Paris’ at the Musée Galliera. She was one of the artists represented by the Minami Gallery in Tokyo, a pioneering gallery of the Japanese avant-garde founded by Kusuo Shimizu, which also exhibited works by Fautrier, Sam Francis and Tinguely in Japan. The poet Makoto Ōoka, a leading figure in Japanese literature and holder of the Order of Culture, praised the refined elegance of her work; together with the writer Bernard Noël and Kunio Motoe, he dedicated the monograph *Shimada Shizu: bouquet pour Shizu* (Tokyo, 2004) to her. On her return to Japan in 1978, she continued her work independently, dividing her time between Zushi and Paris. Her colourful and rhythmic abstraction, which combines Japanese tradition with Western formal rigour, earned her the 15th Yasushi Inoue Cultural Prize. Her works are featured in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yokosuka Museum of Art, amongst others.
