Description
Jacques VILLON (1875–1963) “Composition (1953)”, Drawing, gouache, 6-colour stencil on vellum paper, signed lower right, 28.5 x 18.5 cm Note: A French painter, draughtsman and printmaker, whose real name was Gaston Duchamp, Jacques Villon was the eldest of the famous siblings comprising Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp. Trained in printmaking from a young age by his grandfather Émile Frédéric Nicolle, he initially established a prolific career as an illustrator and printmaker in Paris. From the 1910s onwards, his work evolved towards an artistic exploration deeply influenced by Cubism, particularly focusing on the decomposition of forms, geometric construction and the representation of movement. In particular, he took part in the Salon de la Section d’Or in 1912, alongside several leading artists of the Cubist avant-garde. His work as an engraver remains particularly significant, notably his famous interpretations of works by Cézanne and Manet.
