Christian DOTREMONT & Serge VANDERCAM (20th century) What nonsense to regard cleanliness as the absence of relationships, 1959 Mixed media on paper. Inscribed within the composition: ‘What a daft idea to regard cleanliness as the absence of relationships. Cleanliness is the homogeneity of all relationships.’ 50 × 36 cm. Note: This work belongs to the *Boues* series, created in 1959 by Serge Vandercam in collaboration with Christian Dotremont. The interplay between writing and material reflects the two artists’ shared exploration of the sign, gesture and language, building on the Cobra movement.
