Description
Mwenze KIBWANGA [Kilumba (DRC), 1925–1999, Lubumbashi (DRC)]
(Untitled) Antelopes, oil on canvas. Signed lower right, c. 1960, framed. 62 x 75 cm.
Note:
Mwenze Kibwanga was born in 1925 in Kilumba, in the province of Katanga. In 1934, he began attending classes at the Protestant mission in Mwanza, where he also took drawing lessons. He left his village in 1942 to settle in Elisabethville and continued his primary education with the Methodists. In 1950, Kibwanga was admitted to the ‘Atelier du Hangar’, founded by the French painter Romain-Desfossés. It was there that he developed his style, bringing his subjects to life through a technique of hatching and parallel lines alternating between light and dark tones that follow the contours of people, animals and vegetation.
