Description
René GUIETTE (1893–1976)
Untitled, calligraphy, drawing, signed lower right, dated 69, approx. 74 × 39 cm.
Note:
A Belgian painter, draughtsman and art critic, René Guiette was one of the most distinctive figures of the 20th-century Belgian avant-garde. Self-taught and close to Blaise Cendrars and Max Jacob, he moved from Expressionism and Cubism towards a freer style of painting, influenced by esotericism and Eastern philosophies.
In 1925, Le Corbusier designed the famous Maison Guiette in Antwerp for him, the architect’s only project in Belgium. A member of the Compagnie de l’Art Brut, founded by Jean Dubuffet, from 1948, Guiette was also supported in Paris by the art critic Michel Tapié.
From the mid-1950s onwards, deeply influenced by Zen philosophy, he developed a pictorial language based on symbols, writing and a gestural style inspired by Far Eastern calligraphy.
Arabesques, symbols and imaginary scripts thus became the vehicles for an inner, meditative exploration, particularly characteristic of his work from the 1960s.
