Description
Gaston BERTRAND (1910–1994)
Geometric composition, ink drawing, signed and dated 1978 in the bottom right-hand corner, signed and confirmed on the reverse. 36 x 26 cm.
Note:
A Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver, Gaston Bertrand trained at the École Saint-Luc in Brussels, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Henri Van Haelen and Anto-Carte, and subsequently at the Academy of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
There, he became particularly close friends with Anne Bonnet and Louis Van Lint.
A recipient of a Prix de Rome scholarship in 1937, he was involved with the Art Jeune, La Route libre and Apport, before becoming, in 1945, one of the founding members of La Jeune Peinture belge, alongside Anne Bonnet, Louis Van Lint, Jo Delahaut and Marc Mendelson, amongst others. His work evolved from figurative and intimate painting towards a highly refined style, built around a few essential lines, large areas of colour and a strong architectural rigour, without ever veering entirely into abstraction.
The Apollo Gallery dedicated several solo exhibitions to him from the 1940s onwards. A lecturer at the École Saint-Luc in Brussels from 1956, he taught, amongst others, Luc Mondry, Francis de Bolle, Francis Herth and Camille De Taeye. In 1987, he was elected a member of the Fine Arts Class of the Royal Academy of Belgium.
