Description
Hilde VAN SUMERE (1932–2013) Composition, sculpture, polished bronze (pinkish), signed, 10 x 3 cm excluding Plexiglas plinth Note: A leading figure in Belgian abstract sculpture of the second half of the 20th century, Hilde Van Sumere was one of the principal representatives of Constructivism in Belgium. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Jacques Moeschal, whose assistant she later became, she developed a personal artistic language based on geometry, the balance of volumes and the purity of forms. From the 1970s onwards, her stays in Carrara played a decisive role in her work, with white marble becoming one of her favourite materials alongside bronze, steel and Plexiglas. The creator of numerous monumental sculptures in Belgium and abroad – notably for the Brussels metro, the VRT and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games – she was elected a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium in 1995.
