Description
Seyni Awa CAMARA, Seni Awa CAMARA (1945–2026) Maternity, terracotta sculpture. 30 x 19 x 21 cm. Note: A Senegalese sculptor and potter originally from Casamance, Seyni Awa Camara developed a distinctive body of work, at the crossroads of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. Introduced to pottery techniques by her mother and grandmother in the 1960s, she quickly developed a personal style, producing fire-baked terracotta figures in her courtyard in Bignona, which were sold locally. Although associated with the first generation of the Dakar School whilst remaining deeply independent, she created a rich and varied world populated by human, animal or hybrid figures, sometimes linked to themes of motherhood. Her international recognition grew following her participation in the ‘Magiciens de la Terre’ exhibition at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette. Several of her works were subsequently acquired by French national collections, and are now held at the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, who paid tribute to her upon her death. Through the freedom of her imagination and the expressive power of her forms, Seyni Awa Camara established herself as a major figure in contemporary African sculpture.
