Description
United States, 5-dollar gold ‘Indian Head Half Eagle’ coin, 1910, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt.
An iconic example of the revamp of the US coinage undertaken in the early 20th century under the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
It is distinguished by its remarkable intaglio design, a particularly innovative technique in which the portrait of the Native American chief and the various motifs are engraved below the surface of the coin, as opposed to traditional relief.
The obverse features the profile of a Native American chief wearing a feather headdress; the reverse, a standing eagle.
The coin is mounted as a pendant within a substantial twisted 18-carat gold setting, complete with a bail. Probably struck in Philadelphia.
Total weight: approx. 12 g, of which approx. 3.7 g is for the setting and the bail.
