**FENG JI (冯箕), known as Qixia**
China, Qing dynasty, early 19th century
"A scholar meditating by the water’s edge, accompanied by two women"
Ink and light colours on paper.
The composition depicts a scholar meditating by a bank lined with willow trees, accompanied by two women – a theme characteristic of the ideal of scholarly leisure during the Qing dynasty.
Bears the inscription ‘Painted by Qixia of West Lake’ and a red seal reading ‘Seal of Feng Ji’s Paintings’.
A label on the reverse attributes the work to Feng Ji, a Qing dynasty figure painter.
Feng Ji, whose artist’s name was Qixia and who was originally from Qiantang, specialised in particular in figure painting and depictions of female beauties.
Early 19th century.
