Description
A very rare quadrangular ritual bronze vessel, of the Fangding type, China (方鼎) The quadrangular body rests on four column-shaped feet. Each side is decorated in relief with a taotie mask, comprising two dragons depicted in profile, with large heads and serrated jaws, against a leiwen background. The decoration is surmounted by a frieze of facing kui dragons, punctuated by vertical raised ridges, which are also present at the corners. Two vertical ring-shaped handles rise on either side of the slightly flared rim. The interior bears, beneath the rim, a cast character or grapheme. The surface has a reddish-brown to dark grey and greenish patina, enhanced by pale green inlays. Probably late Shang Dynasty, Anyang, 12th–11th century BC. Provenance: Belgian private collection; bronze acquired in 1947 in the Kansai region of Japan. Accompanied by a wooden box. Height including plinth: 47 cm Height of the vase: 34 cm Width: 25 cm Depth: 20.5 cm In perfect condition. Manufacturing defects (casting). (UV-checked).
