Senneh carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), North-West Persia, c. 1900 93 x 130 cm The town of Senneh, or Sanandaj, has long been renowned for the finesse of its carpets, both in terms of the quality of the knotting or weaving and its decorative motifs. Kurdish wool is long and lustrous, but dry and coarse, a quality accentuated by a short shearing. Senneh carpets, with a warp often made of silk and a single, very tightly drawn cotton weft thread, are thus very finely knotted. The carpet is adorned with the classic Herati pattern covering the entire field, featuring a central navy blue diamond-shaped medallion on an ivory ground and four navy blue spandrels. It is framed by a samovari border set between fine counter-borders with a floral design. Slight wear and minor imperfections
