After Michael Butterfield (1635-1735), a brass sundial with compass or 'Butterfield gnomon', 20th century.
Brass and glass.
An octagonal pocket sundial with built-in compass. Horizontal dial and gnomon adjustable over a range of latitudes. The beak of the bird supporting the gnomon serves as the index for the latitude scale. With four separate sets of hour scales.
With the latitudes of 17 cities on the back side.
Signed 'Butterfield à Paris'.
After the design by Michael Butterfield (1635-1735), born in London and active in Paris.
