Coromandel wood with Gothic Revival bronze fittings.Folding-out writing box with letter compartments, original inkwells and a writing surface in blue velvet.Centrally located in the writing surface is a button that springs open a hidden compartment at the rear of the writing box.Marked 'Betjemanns - N°12 - Patent'.Victorian style and period.England, Second half of the 19th century. George Betjemann & Sons were prominent 19th-century London furniture makers and manufacturers of luxury dressing cases, writing boxes, and tantalus (liquor cabinets), known for their high-quality craftsmanship and innovative mechanisms. The family business, founded by George Betjemann (1798–1886), was located on Pentonville Road and displayed their refined work at various World Exhibitions.
