Description
Béla KADAR (1877–1956) Portrait of a Woman, c. 1931 (caricature) Pencil drawing on paper. H_ 49 cm W_ 35 cm Signs of damp. Signed lower right and inscribed ‘Exposition coloniale Paris 1931’. Originally from Budapest, Béla Kádár began his artistic training in Germany, Austria and France, where he took courses in industrial drawing and design. In 1914, he created frescoes for the Hungarian National Theatre. He took an interest in popular lyrical expressionism and drew inspiration from the works of Marc Chagall, Henrich Campendok and Franz Marc. His career truly began in Vienna in the early 1920s and took off partly thanks to his close ties with members of the Der Blaue Reiter group. His works were featured in two prestigious exhibitions at the Der Sturm gallery in Berlin and then at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. In 1937, one of his compositions appeared on the cover of the catalogue for the ‘degenerate art’ exhibition organised by the Nazis. A retrospective was dedicated to him at the National Gallery in Budapest in 1977. Expert: Artéon - Expert: Artéon
