Description
Late 19th-century French school
A large medallion in red Lorraine terracotta depicting, in bas-relief, the profile of Claude Gelée, known as Le Lorrain (1600–1682)
H_ 73 cm W_ 60 cm
Claude Gellée, better known by the nickname Le Lorrain, left his native region at a very early age to spend his entire life and career in Rome. Having settled there as early as 1613 and become a member of the Academy of Saint Luke in 1633, he received commissions throughout his career from all the popes and the most prominent Italian families.
During the first half of the 17th century, the historic landscape became an international phenomenon, within which Le Lorrain – who had trained under two masters of landscape painting, Goffredo Wals and Agostino Tassi, became part of a movement known as ‘classical landscape’, characterised by natural elements, figures and animals depicted serenely and harmoniously arranged within an orderly and spacious setting.
