Paul-Louis CYFFLÉ (1724–1806, attributed to the Lunéville Manufactory. ‘Renaud and Armide’ Group in improved pipe clay biscuit H_29.5 cm D_25.5 cm Chips. Losses. Literary successes were a source of inspiration for artists in the 18th century. Published in 1580, Tasso’s *Jerusalem Delivered* is one of the greatest Italian epic poems, recounting the First Crusade led by Godfrey of Bouillon. The work notably depicts the love story between the Saracen sorceress Armide and the Christian knight Renaud, which inspired several operas, including Lully’s *Armide*. Whilst seeking revenge on Renaud, Armide finds him asleep and defenceless thanks to her enchantments, but refrains from killing him when she succumbs to his charm. This scene of love and self-sacrifice was depicted by Paul-Louis Cyfflé around 1770 in a sculptural group inspired by a painting by Carle Van Loo. The composition highlights the sensuality of the figures and symbolises the triumph of love over revenge.
