This interesting painting, whose artist we have been unable to identify, forms part of the troubadour movement. It draws its inspiration in particular from the successes of Alexandre Dumas, such as *The Three Musketeers*, published as early as 1844, and also from Jean-Léon Gérôme’s famous painting, *A Duel After the Ball*, painted in 1857 and exhibited at the Salon that same year.
