Provenance: - Collection of Henri de Conigliano (or Conegliano), French military officer and historian (1864–1940) Our portrait is a copy of the portrait of Charles Alexandre de Lorraine painted by Meytens in 1743. As a painter to the Habsburgs in Vienna, Meytens established himself as one of the court’s leading portraitists. The original portrait of Charles Alexandre de Lorraine is held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Our portrait is a copy of the portrait of Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine (1712–1780) painted by Martin van Meytens in 1743. As the Habsburg court painter in Vienna, Meytens established himself during the 1740s as one of the court’s leading portraitists. Charles-Alexandre of Lorraine held a particularly important position within the House of Habsburg at that time. He was the younger brother of François-Étienne of Lorraine, who became Grand Duke of Tuscany and later Emperor. His career spanned both the military and political spheres; he took part in the major European conflicts of the mid-18th century before being appointed Governor-General of the Austrian Netherlands, a post he held for several decades. It was against this backdrop of dynastic assertiveness that Meytens painted his portrait in 1743. In it, the prince is depicted in accordance with the conventions of the grand European aristocratic portrait established in the early 18th century by Rigaud. The original portrait of Charles-Alexandre of Lorraine is now housed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The success of this portrait explains the existence of several copies and variations intended to disseminate the prince’s image throughout the various residences and institutions associated with the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.
