This fascinating painting by André Joly is one of the few surviving works from a series of paintings that once adorned Stanislas Leszczynski’s grand cabinet at Lunéville Castle and depicted the various residences of the King of Poland in Lorraine. Born in 1677, Stanislas Leszczynski was elected King of Poland in 1704 before being forced into exile. Having become Duke of Lorraine in 1737, following his marriage to the daughter of Louis XV, he established his court at Lunéville, where he retained the title and prestige of a European sovereign until his death in 1766. During his reign, the court at Lunéville flourished and enjoyed genuine European influence. His position enabled Stanislas to retain his influence and a certain degree of power. A true prince-builder, he gathered around him artists, architects and men of letters, and undertook numerous projects designed to embellish his residences and his dominions. Our painting, accompanied in this sale by a companion piece (see previous lot), depicts the Château de Chanteheux as seen from its gardens; it is one of the most iconic residences built for Stanislas in the vicinity of Lunéville. Built from 1740 onwards under the direction of Emmanuel Héré, Chanteheux was designed as a pleasure palace intended for the court’s festivities and entertainments. Situated as an extension of the Lunéville estate, the château bears witness to the ambitious architectural policy pursued by Stanislas and his determination to make his court one of the most brilliant in Europe. Almost entirely dismantled after his death, Chanteheux is known today only through a few surviving records. André Joly, the artist behind our paintings, was a painter, architect and interior designer. He was notably involved in the set designs for court festivities and theatres before becoming the King’s Court Painter and Architect in 1744, and then First Painter in 1748. This privileged position placed him at the heart of the artistic and cultural enterprise established by the former King of Poland in Lorraine. Now largely overlooked, André Joly’s work is being brought to the fore by the rediscovery of our two paintings which, owing to their exceptional provenance, offer a rare insight into the splendour of Stanislas’s court in Lorraine. Published at the start of the last century by Pierre Boyé in several of his works, our paintings were also displayed alongside other works by André Joly at the 2020 exhibition *Parcs des Lumières, Voltaire en ses terres*.
