Description
19th-century French School
Château de la Bermondière by the Viscountess du Halgouët.
Watercolour with gouache highlights.
26 x 40 cm.
Slight foxing.
The Château de la Bermondière is situated 4 kilometres north of the French commune of Saint-Julien-du-Terroux, on the very border of the department of Mayenne, between two branches of the River Mayenne.
It is typical of small country châteaux, a style that originated in the Paris region in the early 18th century and which bears witness to the growing popularity of holidaying among the bourgeoisie.
Pierre de JAROSSON, a squire, secretary to the king and barrister at the Parliament, who commissioned its reconstruction around 1740 after having recently acquired the lands of La Bermondière, lived in Paris in winter and at La Bermondière in summer.
The physicist and naturalist René-Antoine FERCHAULT de REAUMUR died there on 17 October 1757.
The château was looted during the French Revolution on 18 July 1789 and burnt down by the Germans on 13 August 1943.
Following the fire, Mr Robert du PLESSIS d’ARGENTRE, the owner, received compensation for its reconstruction.
