Description
VENICE - Murano - 19th century BLOWN GLASS SPRINKLER VASE, baluster-shaped with a high, banded neck and a rimmed edge from which three handles extend, featuring an applied dot motif resting on the shoulder, alternating with three spouts ending in small coloured glass collars. It stands on a pedestal. H.: 27 cm. This vase design can be compared to the work of Antonio Salviati (1816–1890). In 1866, Antonio Salviati founded the Compagnia Venezia Murano and transformed the company by becoming the first owner of a glassworks to employ a large number of skilled workers to mass-produce glass intended for export, mainly to England and France. The Victorian era saw Salviati transform glassware – once the preserve of the aristocracy – into decorative pieces seen by millions of people in homes and salons across Italy. He re-established Murano as the world centre of glassmaking.
