Description
TIBET – Late 19th century THANGKA, tempera on canvas, with a central depiction of Lobsang Palden Yeshe, the 6th Panchen Lama, wearing a yellow pandita hat and a monk’s robe in matching shades, seated cross-legged, in front of a mandorla of flowering foliage and peaches, surmounted by a bouquet of ratna (jewels) surrounded by flames, his right hand in the dharmachakra mudra (mudra of argumentation), the left in dhyana mudra holding the book of teachings. Behind him lies the kharsil (monk’s staff); in front of him, offerings arranged on a table; lamas on either side. On the reverse, mudras. 32 x 26 cm. Framed under glass. These two thangkas are inspired by the works of Choying Gyatso (active c. 1640–1660), based on a series of past incarnations of the Panchen Lama. There are thirteen thangkas based on depictions from the Gelugpa monastery at Nartang in the Rubin Museum, New York.
