Description
TIBET – Late 19th century
THANGKA, tempera on canvas, Yungton Dorje Pel (1284–1365), wearing a red pandita headdress and an orange-red monastic robe, seated on a tiger skin in a relaxed posture, in his right hand he holds a phurbu (dagger), and in his left a skull cup, a kapala, which he holds out as an offering to a wrathful blue deity, whose head is surmounted by five skulls.
On the reverse, mudras.
32 x 26 cm.
Framed under glass.
These two thangkas are inspired by the works of Choying Gyatso (active c. 1640–1660), based on a series of past incarnations of the Panchen Lama. There are thirteen thangkas based on depictions from the Gelugpa monastery at Nartang in the Rubin Museum, New York.
