Description

Stamped F*FOLIOT for François I FOLIOT.
The backrest is upholstered in corduroy with a foliage motif.
85 x 63 x 47 cm
Signs of wear.
François I FOLIOT was admitted as a master craftsman on 1 August 1749. He took over from his father, Nicolas, retaining the workshop on Rue de Cléry, which bore the sign ‘Duc de Bretagne’. Like his father, he received commissions from the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, but he also worked for dealers, upholsterers and private clients. It appears that he executed the decoration of his chairs himself, as he was a member, as a sculptor, of the Académie de Saint-Luc. After his death on 20 August 1761, his second wife succeeded him, followed in 1769 by his second son, François Toussaint, known as François II, who had just come of age. The latter continued to use his father’s mark.
It seems logical, however, to attribute our pair of armchairs to François I, given the date of his death; these Louis XV chairs, with their very clean lines – of which there are very few – are stamped ‘F*FOLIOT’.
