Nicolas PETIT (1732–1791) was admitted as a Master on 21 January 1761. In his workshop on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, under the sign of the ‘Nom de Jésus’, this cabinetmaker produced, over a period of nearly thirty years, a vast number of pieces of furniture of every style and kind. Given his experimentation, his highly eclectic choices and his desire to constantly adapt to changing tastes, it is hardly possible to define his personal style. At best, one can speak of preferences. His career did not officially begin until he registered his master’s certificate on 27 September 1763. He very quickly gained a reputation and prospered.
François REIZELL was admitted as a Master on 26 February 1764. This craftsman of German origin began his career in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, on Rue Traversière; around 1770, he left the cabinetmakers’ quarter to set up shop on Rue des Saints-Pères and finally on Rue du Petit-Lion-Saint-Germain. He did not have his master’s certificate registered until 22 February 1765 and, at that time, employed as a journeyman the man who would become the famous cabinetmaker Joseph BAUMHAUER. His principal client was the Prince of Condé, to whom he supplied numerous pieces of furniture for the Palais-Bourbon and for his châteaux at Chantilly and Villegénis.
