Ziegler was the first artist to make the transition from painting to ceramics. It was during a mission to Germany in 1834, when the king sent him to study stained glass, that he became interested in working with clay, and more specifically in the famous German stoneware of the Middle Ages. He then turned to this technique by founding the Voisinlieu salt-glazed stoneware factory, near Beauvais in the Oise.
At the Voisinlieu factory, between 1839 and 1843, he produced artistic vases in brown salt-glazed stoneware. Ziegler designed his own works. Ziegler’s factory played a very significant role in the history of pottery in France, as it marked the beginning of a trend whereby certain potters broke away from large factories such as Sèvres to pursue their own research, and it signalled a renewed interest in stoneware in artistic ceramics.
The Musée Départemental de l’Oise, the Musée de la Céramique de Sèvres and the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris hold several pieces created by Ziegler, his masterpiece being the ‘Vase aux apôtres’. As production lasted for only three years, the number of artistic pieces to emerge from the kilns at Voisinlieu is estimated at just a few thousand.
