Mahogany pedestal table with gilded bronze decoration, attributed to Bernard MOLITOR (1755–1833) Stands on four legs ending in goat’s-foot feet Top in Turquin blue marble surrounded by a gallery H.73 D.75 cm Comparative bibliography: U. Leben, Molitor. Cabinetmaker from Louis XVI to Louis XVIII, 1992, pp. 127 and 160–161, figs. 101, 103 and 103B. Bernard Molitor was granted master’s status in Paris in 1787. Regarded as one of the most innovative cabinetmakers of the late reign of Louis XVI, he heralded the Empire style through his use of monumental classical motifs on refined mahogany furniture, richly adorned with chiselled and gilded bronze fittings. Among his creations are several guéridons of the same type: a circular marble top, set within an openwork frame, rests on three or four curved legs joined by a circular cross-brace of varying dimensions, the whole ending in gilded bronze animal-shaped feet (see U. Leben, op. cit.). As customs evolved towards the end of the 18th century, the guéridon gradually became a staple of interiors, and the model designed by Molitor enjoyed great success. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris holds a preparatory drawing for a guéridon based on this design (inv. CD 5081.6). Similar examples were sold at Sotheby’s in Paris on 25 September 2024 (lot 46) and at Christie’s in Paris on 15 September 2016 (lot 42).
