Description
A moulded and carved walnut cabriolet armchair, stamped ‘J. B. Boulard’, from the Louis XVI period
The backrest features a basket-handle design. It rests on tapered, fluted legs.
H. 92 W. 64 D. 49 cm
Jean Baptiste Boulard was admitted as a master craftsman in 1754.
Our armchair is almost identical to the one delivered in 1783 for Monsieur d’Yauville’s bedroom at Versailles (Daguerre auction of 29 May 2026, lot 114). There are at least three differences that set it apart from the latter: the carved disc on the rear connecting blocks, the walnut (rather than beech), and the carved leaves at the top of the backrest uprights (applied rather than carved from the solid block).
