Gilded brass graphometer with a movable spirit level. Eight-point compass decorated with foliage motifs. Engraved and signed ‘Canivet à la Sphère à Paris 1770’.
Diameter: 25 cm
Jacques Canivet was admitted as a master on 30 January 1743 and set up shop at La Sphère in 1747. As the inventor of a new type of pantograph, he became an Engineer to the King and to the Academy of Sciences in 1756. As the most prominent instrument maker of the mid-century, he supplied several large sextants and quarter-circles to the observatories in Paris, Milan, Vilnius and Colombes.
