Description
Sessue HAYAKAWA (1889–1973) Autumnal landscape with trees Watercolour on paper, signed lower right with stamp. 46 x 38 cm Ref: Sessue Hayakawa was, in the early days of the Hollywood star system, one of the highest-paid actors, rivalling Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks; his extravagant lifestyle contributed to his legendary status. A cultured man who bridged cultures, he had studied political economy at the University of Chicago, and was a Zen master, actor and producer. In 1937, he came to France to star in several films and found himself forced to remain on French soil following the declaration of war; during those difficult times, he joined the Resistance and survived, amongst other things, by selling his watercolours. After the Liberation, his contribution to the war effort was duly recognised. He was cast as Colonel Saito in *The Bridge on the River Kwai*, a role which, by his own admission, was the finest of his life. In 2007, the Museum of Modern Art in New York organised a retrospective of his work.
