Description
Tourism – René PEAN (1875–1955) Excursions to the Ocean Islands, Île de Ré, The Donkey in Trousers. Circa 1910. Printed by Chaix, Paris. 104 x 75 cm. Original poster, lithograph, mounted on canvas. Condition: very good History: The scene depicted is at St Clément des Baleines in Charente-Maritime, at the foot of the lighthouses. On the Île de Ré, donkeys – more specifically, Poitou donkeys – were used in the salt marshes or in the vineyards. These areas, often overrun by insects such as flies, ticks and mosquitoes, caused unpleasant bites for both the marsh workers and the animals. These bites could lead to inflammation and severe illnesses, sometimes even resulting in the animals’ death. Furthermore, the fields were overgrown with tall grass, which could cause injuries to the donkeys’ legs. According to tradition, it was a woman from Ars-en-Ré around 1860 who came up with the ingenious idea of making a sort of pair of breeches using an old shirt belonging to her husband. It has since become a tourist attraction.
