Description
‘PUG’ SET OF FIVE PORCELAIN FIGURINES
MEISSEN, BASED ON DESIGNS BY KÄNDLER AND REINICKE, 19TH CENTURY
A set of five polychrome glazed porcelain figurines depicting pugs in various poses: sitting, on the lookout or scratching themselves. Four of the figurines are adorned with a blue collar embellished with gold bells in relief; one has a plain collar. Fine quality of modelling and painting, particularly in the expressive rendering of the animals and the naturalistic treatment of the coat. Period casts based on the famous historical models created in the 18th century by Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reinicke for the Meissen Manufactory. The model of the pug scratching itself is particularly rare.
Markings: the Meissen Manufactory mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue underglaze; incised model numbers: ‘861’ (model by Peter Reinicke, 1747) on two figures; ‘799’ (design by Johann Joachim Kändler); ‘952’ (design by Johann Joachim Kändler, 1737) and the painter’s number handwritten in red ink ‘540’; partially erased number and an incised modeller’s mark ‘A’ (Bossierer).
H. 10 cm, 10 cm, 7 cm, 11 cm, 5 cm
Condition: very good overall condition, slight wear to the gilding on the bells
