Description
‘PUG FIGHTS’ SET OF TWO PORCELAIN GROUPS MEISSEN, AFTER A DESIGN BY JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER, 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES A set of two polychrome glazed porcelain groups depicting pugs playing and wrestling on a rocky terrace. Both compositions are based on the famous model created in the 18th century by Johann Joachim Kändler and bear witness to the enduring popularity of this motif within the Meissen Manufactory. The first group, from the 19th century, comprises three collared pugs, rendered with remarkable naturalism. The base is outlined with a gold band. The second group, from the second half of the 20th century, features three pugs wearing blue collars accented with gold and adorned with bells. The polychrome finish particularly highlights the nuances of their coats. Markings: the Meissen Manufactory’s ‘two crossed swords’ mark in blue, applied under the glaze, on both groups. The 19th-century group bears the historical 18th-century model number for the original composition of the pugs by Kändler and August Ringler, ‘F 186’, and the modeller’s number ‘29’. The 20th-century group bears the model number ‘78836’, corresponding to the modern reissue of the ‘F 186’ model, as well as the workshop number ‘616’. 8 x 16.5 cm (each) Condition: the 19th-century group is in very good condition, with slight wear to the gilding; the 20th-century group is in very good condition. This lot is of particular interest to collectors, bringing together two versions of the same iconic model by Johann Joachim Kändler, produced during two distinct periods at the Meissen Manufactory. It offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the evolution of the porcelain body, the quality of workmanship and the decorative styles of the manufactory between the 19th century and the modern era.
