Description
‘THE SHEPHERD AND THE SHEPHERDESS FEEDING A LAMB’ PORCELAIN GROUP, 19TH CENTURY MEISSEN, KNAUF PERIOD, CIRCA 1860–1890 A porcelain group in polychrome glaze with gold highlights, set on a naturalistic rocky base depicting a mound. The scene depicts a young couple of shepherds, barefoot and in a tender pose. The shepherdess, dressed in a purple bodice and a green striped skirt with painted floral decoration, holds a large wicker basket overflowing with fruit rendered in relief. The shepherd, wearing an almond-green jacket with floral lapels, sits beside a finely modelled lamb. The ground is embellished with bunches of grapes and sculpted branches. Period moulding and decoration based on the model created in 1769 by the sculptor Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799). Markings: Meissen factory mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue underglaze; historical model number ‘C 41’ hand-incised into the soft paste; modeller’s number ‘12’1 and a geometric workshop mark incised 19.5 x 15.5 cm Condition: good overall condition for its age, the 19th-century glazes retain their fresh lustre, with slight surface wear and wear to the gilding on the reliefs of the base.
