‘THE GALANT GARDENERS UNDER THE APPLE TREE’ PORCELAIN SCULPTURE GROUP, 19TH CENTURY
MEISSEN, KNAUF PERIOD, CIRCA 1860–1890
A porcelain group with polychrome glaze and gold highlights, on an oval rocaille plinth with triple volutes. The scene depicts a young gentleman in court dress leaning against an apple tree laden with fruit, courting a seated young woman whose apron is adorned with flowers in relief. At her feet rests a floral openwork wicker basket. In the background, a young girl is picking fruit on the mound. Refined polychrome decoration, with floral bouquets painted with a fine brush on the textiles. Period moulding and decoration based on the neoclassical model created in 1772 by the sculptor Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799)
Markings: Meissen factory mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue under the glaze, historical model number ‘G 1237’, accompanied by the modeller’s mark ‘178 m’, incised into the soft clay, and the painter’s number ‘28’ in red on the glaze
27.5 x 12 cm
Condition: good overall condition for its age, the enamels and gilding retain their fresh appearance, very slight signs of wear at the tips of the relief foliage, a small chip on the young man’s ponytail
