Description
‘THE SHEPHERD AND SHEPHERDESS WITH A ROSE’ PORCELAIN GROUP, 19TH CENTURY MEISSEN, KNAUF PERIOD, CIRCA 1860–1890 A porcelain group with polychrome glaze and gold highlights, set on a naturalistic rocky base depicting a mound. The scene depicts a young shepherd couple sitting entwined. The shepherd, with curly black hair, wearing a yellow jacket and purple-striped breeches, slips a rose into the shepherdess’s hair. She, holding a shepherd’s crook, wears a laced bodice and a white skirt richly decorated with hand-painted polychrome floral bouquets. A sheep and a basket of flowers complete the scene. The faces and drapery are beautifully executed. Period casting and decoration based on the original model created in 1771 by the sculptor Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799). Markings: Meissen factory mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue under the glaze, model number ‘G 1211’ hand-incised into the soft clay, painter’s number ‘55’ in red on the glaze 18 x 14.5 cm Condition: good overall condition for its age At the buyer’s request, we will be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
