Description
‘THE SHEPHERD COUPLE WITH THE GARLAND’ PORCELAIN GROUP
MEISSEN, CIRCA 1950–1970
An elegant porcelain group in polychrome glaze with gold highlights, set on a naturalistic base resembling a mound. The scene depicts a young shepherd couple sitting entwined, holding a long garland of flowers applied in relief. The shepherdess, barefoot and dressed in a yellow bodice and a white skirt richly adorned with gilded floral scrolls, raises a bouquet above her companion. The shepherd wears a cobalt blue jacket with pastel purple lapels. At their feet, a wicker basket adorned with flowers rests on the rocky ground. A high-quality reissue based on the original model created in 1769 by the sculptor Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799).
Markings: Meissen mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue underglaze, model number ‘60128’ (the modern equivalent of the historical form ‘C 24’) incised into the clay, workshop modeller’s number ‘125 L’
19.5 x 12 cm
