Description
‘THE LOVING COUPLE UNDER THE OAK TREE’ PORCELAIN SCULPTURE
MEISSEN, CIRCA 1950–1970
A porcelain group in polychrome glaze with gold highlights, on a textured oval base decorated with applied small flowers. The Baroque-inspired scene depicts a couple in love sitting entwined at the foot of a large, leafy oak tree laden with acorns in relief. The young man, dressed in an ochre jacket and purple breeches, supports his companion, who is wearing a blue bodice and a loose-fitting white dress richly adorned with hand-painted floral bouquets. The composition is distinguished by the quality of the modelling, the delicacy of the plant motifs and the expressiveness of the faces. A high-quality reissue based on an 18th-century model attributed to Johann Joachim Kändler (1706–1775)
Markings: Meissen factory mark ‘two crossed swords’ in blue underglaze, model number ‘73082’ (the modern equivalent of the historical form ‘D 95’) incised into the clay, workshop modeller’s number ‘126 K’
18 x 14.5 cm
