Description
IMPORTANT SÈVRES-STYLE PORCELAIN JEWELLERY BOX, NAPOLEON III PERIOD, CIRCA 1870–1880
A curvilinear jewellery box in hard porcelain with a cobalt blue (‘furnace blue’) interior, set on an original chiselled gilded bronze mount. The lid is adorned with a large, hand-painted polychrome cartouche depicting a rural scene in the neo-18th-century style, reminiscent of the pastoral scenes of Watteau or Fragonard. The cartouche is framed by a rich high-relief decoration of foliage, scrollwork, rocaille volutes and bouquets of flowers, enhanced with fine gold. The band features, on its main face, a landscape cartouche depicting a tree-lined riverbank, delicately painted and outlined with gilded lines. The interior is entirely enamelled in white.
The chiselled gilded bronze mount is preserved in its original condition and features its original hinged joint as well as a functional gadrooned clasp. The scene on the lid is signed, in the bottom right-hand corner, by F. Lauqué, a porcelain painter active in the 19th century, known for his Rococo-inspired designs and seascapes.
