The Gothic service was commissioned by Nicholas I for the Winter Palace and produced in 1832 based on designs by I.A. Ivanov, before being presented to the Emperor in 1833. Designed in a distinctive neo-Gothic style inspired by stained-glass motifs, the service originally comprised 150 place settings and was subsequently expanded throughout the 19th century, with additional pieces supplied by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory as well as by the Kornilov brothers’ manufactory, eventually reaching 200 place settings by the end of the century.
