IMPERIAL GIFT KOVSH IN SILVER AND VERMEIL Moscow, 1744 WITH AN ENGRAVED DEDICATION: ‘BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WE, ELIZABETH, THE FIRST EMPRESS AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIA, PRESENT THIS KOVSH TO PANTELEI SELIVANOV, CAPTAIN OF THE DON COSSACKS, FOR HIS FAITHFUL SERVICE IN MOSCOW ON 28 JULY 1744’ A traditionally shaped kovsh, featuring an engraved imperial double-headed eagle and the monogram of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, adorned with a laurel wreath. The sides are engraved with cartouches bearing dedicatory inscriptions. The bow is adorned with a finial in the shape of a double-headed eagle. The handle has been replaced by a later engraved handle, featuring a medallion bearing the effigy of the Empress beneath a canopy-shaped border Hallmark: master’s mark in Cyrillic silver, engraved, gilded L. 27.5 cm Provenance: Pantelei Selivanov By descent Vladimir Nikolaevich [Trotsky-]Seniutovich (1877–1957) (Vladimir Trotskii-Seniutovich, a petroleum engineer who worked for the Nobel Company, had inherited the kovsh and taken it with him when he and his family went into exile) By descent Sotheby’s London, 2015, lot 1744 Private collection At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
