Description
COMMEMORATIVE CIGARETTE CASE IN BRONZED STEEL WITH GOLD AND SAPPHIRE INLAYS IMPERIAL RUSSIA, CIRCA 1908–1914 Commemorative cigarette case in burnished steel; the obverse features an upper section fluted with diagonal grooves, richly decorated with finely chiselled yellow and rose gold appliqués. The decoration includes two facsimile signatures in Latin script (‘Hans Sponsel’ and ‘Emil’), a stylised heraldic shield, a passing elephant — a symbol of prosperity and an allusion to the Danish Order of the Elephant, closely linked to the Romanov imperial family — as well as two crossed cannons surmounted by the numeral ‘5’, corresponding to a regimental insignia. The reverse is adorned with two large intertwined monograms beneath a crown, executed in gold, as well as three large facsimile signatures in Cyrillic script, rendered in gold wire. The clasp is fitted with a side push-button set with a cabochon sapphire, set within a gold border. The interior, in satin-finished steel, retains its through-rivets in gold securing the external appliqués, as well as its original elastic fastening straps in khaki canvas. polished burnished steel, with inner borders, fastening bands and appliqués in yellow and rose gold 9 × 6.5 × 1.5 cm gross weight: 88 gr.
